EMPOWERING SMALLHOLDER FARMERS WITH PICS HERMETIC BAGS
Our pics hermetic bags (Kinga njaa) have revolutionized small holder farming, providing cost effective solution to preserve agricultural produce. By extending life shelf of harvest and seeds,we empower farmer to reduce post harvest losses, increase income and improve food security for their families and communities.
Impact of the Maize for Technology (M4T) Initiative
At PPTL, we are proud to contribute to sustainable economic growth and improve the lives of Tanzanian farmers through innovative solutions. One such initiative is the Maize for Technology (M4T) project, designed to address the challenges farmers face in accessing affordable and reliable post-harvest storage technology.
Key Highlights:
- Affordable Access to Storage Technology: Many farmers in Tanzania struggle to afford efficient storage solutions at harvest due to existing financial commitments. The M4T initiative allows farmers to exchange maize for a package that includes PICS bags, grain bags, tarpaulins, and a Moisture Meter (PIMA); agricultural inputs that are usually expensive for farmers to purchase during harvesting.
- Inclusive Participation: The M4T project is accessible to all farmers, regardless of their membership in producer organizations, ensuring widespread benefits. The aspect of gender was also given precedence and it was worth to note that women and youth were engaged in the project successfully.
- Successful Implementation in Ruvuma: We have successfully implemented the M4T project in the Ruvuma region (highest producer of Maize) of Tanzania. This achievement was made possible through collaboration with organizations such as RUDI, MCODE, JUWAWARU, CARITAS, government, extension workers, agro-dealers, and local farmers.
- Expanding Credit Access: This new approach has helped to expand credit access to scale up the use of hermetic storage in Tanzania, meeting the core goal of the Cash Tz project, which aims to provide farmers with the financial resources needed for effective post-harvest management. To meet banks’ collateral requirements for offering credit, we provided inputs to farmers, which were exchanged for an equivalent value of maize at the prevailing market price. This service was offered at no additional cost to the farmers, as we covered all delivery expenses.
- Health Improvement: Through the widespread adoption of Hermetic Storage Technology, particularly PICS bags, we have contributed to improved public health by ensuring the availability of chemical-free food.
- Collateral Management Model practice: To promote the adoption of hermetic storage and support sustainable policies, we implemented the Collateral Management Model (CMA). This initiative demonstrated to farmers that the model is viable, enabling them to secure credit facilities from banks during harvest seasons.
- Positive Outcomes: By providing farmers with the necessary storage technology, the M4T project helps reduce post-harvest losses, improve food security, and enhance economic stability for farming communities.This initiative exemplifies our commitment to making a meaningful impact on society and promoting sustainable practices in agriculture.
